Oregon Falls Short in Recycling Goal

Oregon residents and businesses recycled or reused less than half the waste they generated in 2007, sending the rest to landfills and dropping the state's overall recovery rate for the second year in a row.
Oregon's recycling and reuse rate had been increasing steadily since the state began keeping track in 1992, helping burnish the state's green reputation. But the rate dropped to 46.7 percent of trash generated in 2007, environmental regulators said Monday, down from 47.3 percent in 2006 and 49.2 percent in 2005.
