NWF Releases "Fish Out of Water" Report

A report by NWF focuses on the impacts of global warming to NW rivers and wildlife.

Fish Out of Water: A Guide to Global Warming and Pacific Northwest Rivers

Fish Out of Water
provides an overview of the historic and current problems that plague the region’s prized salmon, steelhead, and trout species and identifies how projected changes in regional temperatures and precipitation patterns due to global warming could further stress the fish, pushing already-depleted populations closer to extinction. The report highlights ten of the most popular and important rivers for fisheries (in Oregon, the Deschutes, John Day, Klamath, and Rogue rivers) and explains how they and other rivers throughout the region that have already been significantly degraded by dams, water diversions, loss of riparian vegetation, and other problems are particularly vulnerable to global warming.

It also provides a comprehensive series of recommendations for actions to address the multiple threats to the Pacific Northwest’s rivers and fish, including restoring rivers to more natural conditions and protecting the best remaining habitat; incorporating global warming into fisheries and water resource management plans; and minimizing the threat of global warming altogether by supporting meaningful actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
