What does a $100 contribution do for this organization?
This contribution enables us to provide several groups or schools with the materials and resources they need to start creating backyard and schoolyard habitat sites in their communities.
Why does this donor support this organization?
"I give to NWF because they have a reputation of integrity and take a very positive approach to conservation. Not only does it give me hope for the future, but I know my money will be used carefully and effectively." -Patty Abbate
How do volunteers make a difference for this organization?
Volunteers are the foundation of NWF's strength as a grassroots organization. Backyard wildlife enthusiasts reach out in their communities about creating places for wildlife through sustainable gardening practices. Our conservation volunteers advocate for wildlife by writing their legislators, lobbying, writing letters to the editor, and taking actions through our EnviroAction newsletter. And of course, volunteers help us every day with special events, mailings, and a million other things!

Founded in 1936 as a nationwide federation of conservation groups, National Wildlife Federation (NWF) continues to be the country’s leading grassroots conservation organization. NWF’s Western Natural Resource Center (WNRC) is proud that Oregon is part of the region (which also includes Washington, California and Hawai'i) we are working to protect for our children's future.

We’re a long-time partner in efforts to preserve the Tillamook and Clatsop forests, we supported the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Watersheds Conservation Act of 2004, and recently asked our thousands of Oregon members and activists to submit comments on the Oregon wolf plan. NWF also submitted comments as an organization.

Major Programs and Accomplishments

  • Throughout the Northwest, NWF works extensively on protecting and restoring salmon, both in the Columbia & Snake rivers, and in the Puget Sound area of Washington. Our latest campaign is called Snake River 20/20: A New Vision for Salmon Recovery, which presents a plan for the future in which salmon are recovered, economies are restored and revitalized, and new recreational opportunities are realized. We believe everyone can win, and salmon can be abundant in our region once again. Visit http://www.snakeriver2020.com for more information.
  • In Seattle, where the WNRC is based, we have a strong education program, including several communities engaged in becoming certified by NWF as Community Wildlife Habitats. This unique program empowers homeowners, students, community leaders and businesses to preserve, restore and create sustainable landscapes that support a multitude of wildlife and native plants in their backyards, workplaces, places of learning and other community spaces. We hope to expand this exciting opportunity to Oregon as well!
  • Global warming is another major focus for our region; in particular, we are looking at the impacts of global warming on our rivers and the wildlife that depend upon them. See the "News" section for a report released last year by our office. Beginning in May 2006, we will be stepping up our education and outreach efforts to wildlife enthusiasts in Washington and Oregon.
  • Our office launched the Northwest Women's Environmental Network (NOWWEN) over three years ago to provide women working in or interested in careers in the environment opportunities to connect via a listserv and learning workshops. The network is now over 360 members strong and growing!
