Hells Canyon Preservation Council (HCPC) is the only organization working exclusively to protect, restore and advocate for this spectacular place. HCPC is a small, dedicated group of people who have been successfully advocating for this ecosystem for over 40 years! Accomplishments include stopping the building of new dams in the canyon, reducing the number of jet boats on the river, and influencing the designation of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.
The Hells Canyon of the Snake River is the deepest gorge in North America; yet it remains unprotected from threats such as overgrazing, ORV use, mining, and unrestrained timber harvest.
HCPC is focusing on these major issues:
- Protecting big horn sheep in Hells Canyon
- Protecting wolves returning to Oregon
- Restoration Activities in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area
- Proposing additional wilderness in the area
HCPC also works to protect:
▪ North America’s largest free-roaming elk herd.
▪ Threatened salmon, steelhead and bull trout.
▪ Over 2 million acres of roadless backcountry.
▪ Some of the finest remaining inland old-growth forests and intact native
grasslands.
