Share the Road License Plate Debuts in Oregon

Proceeds from sales to benefit BTA

Press Release

A new "Share the Road" license plate is now available for purchase in Oregon. The license plate is intended to promote traffic safety, and to help keep cyclists and pedestrians safe.

The plates, which feature the silhouette of a cyclist and a "Share the Road" message, cost $10 (plus a $15 plate replacement fee if you're between renewals). Proceeds from the sale of the plates will be distributed to the BTA and Cycle Oregon. At least 500 plates will need to be sold each year in order to continue to have them available.

The plate was created as a result of the passage of Oregon Senate Bill 789-A, sponsored by Sen. Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene. The idea for the bill came when Prozanski's friend and riding partner Jane Higdon was killed while riding her bike, and he wanted to make an improvement in traffic safety.

BTA Executive Director Scott Bricker comments about the new plates, "sharing the road is a vital message, and we think people who both ride and drive will buy these plates as a way to raise awareness. We encourage everyone to buy one and spread the message that Oregonians share the road."

Jerry Norquist, Executive Director of Cycle Oregon, adds: "Our eventual goal is to be the first state with a public policy that requires 'Share the Road' to be included on every license plate issued."

Order your plate today by visiting ODOT's website.
